Use the cartridge number
Open the printer supply screen or inspect the installed cartridge as directed by the printer manual. Record the full cartridge number, including suffixes that can indicate color, region or yield.
Search that code together with the printer model. This guards against cartridges that share a family name but are not accepted by the exact machine.
Confirm color and yield separately
For color printers, check whether you need black, cyan, magenta, yellow or a multi-pack. Do not assume a listing photo shows the same contents as the selected variation.
Standard- and high-yield cartridges can share physical dimensions but have different codes and page-yield claims. Match the version you intend to buy.
Check genuine versus compatible deliberately
